first things first: carpet and paint
They say that paint and carpet can change a room so that is what we went for first. As soon as we got the keys to the house we set out to get the walls painted. The entire house was painted some shade of white (see previous post). Unfortunately, the previous owners didn't always use the same white so the walls looked even dirtier than they really were. We also had a lot of holes to patch.
Craig thinks he and his dad patched close to 30 holes. We found out later that the teenage daughter had an anger issue and it seems she took it out on the walls and doors!? We had to get the house painted quickly so that the new carpet could go in before our lease at the apartment ended.
My parents has just painted two rooms in their house and I really liked those colors. Since we had a short time frame I decided to use four colors total for the walls, one ceiling color and one for the trim. The living room, family room and kitchen all open up to each other so they are the same neutral color, Nomadic Desert. Our bedroom is Meditative (blue), two bedrooms are Halcyon Green and the office/guitar room/my dressing room is the neutral. The hallway to the upper level is a shade lighter than the neutral in the open space, Kilim Beige. We painted all of the ceilings Extra White and the trim is Alabaster.
My uncle is a super contractor in Houston and he allowed us to use his account number at Sherwin Williams so we got a high quality paint at a discounted price. We would not have been able to afford this paint without his discount so we were thankful for Uncle Tommy's generosity!
We painted as much as we could before we went to Texas for Christmas. While we were gone Craig's dad gave us the greatest Christmas gift ever and kept painting! When we came back it was done and we were ready for the carpet.
Carpet was interesting. We went to Lowe's many times and looked at the carpet. No one ever seemed to want to help us so we moved onto Home Depot. At Home Depot we discovered they could not get the carpet fast enough for our time-line. We left there feeling dejected and confused and ventured onto Boulder to see what they had for us there. We went to Carpet Exchange and the woman who helped us was wonderful. She was very respectful of our price range and helped us find a carpet that was in-stock so we could get it in on time. Our carpet was installed in less than a week and we were ready to move in!
So the dirty walls are now clean and the dirty carpet is replaced. I know what you are thinking...there is still so much work to do. Some days we feel like it will never end and some days we feel like progress has been made. Next time I'll show you the amazing floor that Craig installed in our front room over a long weekend.
